Laughing hysterically, we fell into each other’s arms and there on the carpet, made mad and feverish conversation until the doorbell rang.

We looked deeply into each other’s hearts and saw our own reflections, missing other debris of former battles.  Our lips touched but from a distance and we waited between the phantom touch and its dissolution for a flash of insight or hot burning love.

But our lips lost the field that joined them from afar without any flash.  A million miles of emotion, guilt and indifference slipped in.

A sad smile finds its way to our faces, not quite becoming smug and betraying only the slightest hint of a tremble or regret.   We feel both elated and relieved as at the end of a tightrope act, two walkers make the final step to saftey.  Cheated and rewarded with the same action.
